One Book One Valley

Northern New England has many “lost” towns–settlements that existed and thrived for a period of time, and then, for a variety of economic, social, or other reasons, ceased to exist. One such lost town is an important element in Go With Me. More locally, there is Shawtown, a settlement that used to be found in Freedom’s northwest corner, whose location today is revealed by its cellar hole remnants.

On Thursday, October 14 at 7 pm at the Conway Public Library, Carol Foord will talk about Shawtown’s growth and eventual demise. Using slides and maps, Carol will lead a virtual tour of Shawtown, moving from site to site, just as the census taker in 1860 would have done.

Folks who don’t normally attend book discussions are encouraged to attend one of our One Book, One Valley discussions. These meetings are not only for avid readers and deep thinkers, but can be fun ways to socialize (face-to-face!) with some new people and talk about something you all have in common. Those who regularly attend book clubs will attest that a variety of voices and views makes for a lively and interesting discussion.

Some tips for book group newbies:

It’s a good idea to read the book. But, if you didn’t finish, come anyway. No promises for no spoilers, though.
It’s okay to come if you didn’t like the book. Some of the best book discussions happen when not everyone in the group shares the same opinion.
It’s okay to just listen to the conversation, you don’t have to weigh in on every point.
Most of the time, there are refreshments.
