This week we have two events that touch on our book’s interrelated themes of place and culture.
Tuesday, October 20 at 6 pm, the Effingham Public Library is hosting a slideshow talk by Kamal Nath, “A Few Glimpses of India Past.”
Thursday, October 22 at 6 pm, the Brownfield Public Library will host a slide presentation by local photographer Patricia Turner, “On Location: Photographing the Essence of Place.”
Readers from across the Mount Washington Valley will gather on Thursday, October 25 at 7 pm at the Lutheran Church of the Nativity in North Conway Village. Lisa Gardner, author of this year’s 1 Book 1 Valley selection, “Love You More,” will speak about her book, her writing, research, and more. All are welcome at this free event, whether or not they have read the book ahead of time.
White Birch Books will have copies of Love You More and other books by Lisa Gardner available for sale and signing after the program.
There is still time to attend a book discussion at a local library before Thursday’s big event: Monday at 7 pm in Madison, Tuesday at 12:30 pm in Effingham, and Wednesday at 5:00 pm in Jackson.
1 Book 1 Valley is funded by grants from the Pequawket Foundation and the Kendal C. and Anna Ham Charitable Foundation, along with financial support from participating libraries’ Friends groups and White Birch Books.

This week (Oct.31-Nov. 4), there are five Following Atticus book discussions at locations throughout the valley (see schedule). All are welcome at any of these events.
At the Madison Library on Thursday, November 3 at 7 pm, One Book One Valley’s project humanist, Marcia Schmidt Blaine, will give a talk on “Saving the Mountains: New Hampshire and the Creation of the National Forests,” a look at the history of the mountains and trails that we all enjoy today.
This year marks the 100th anniversary of the Weeks Act, the law that created the eastern national forests. New Hampshire’s White Mountains played a leading role in events leading to the act. Focusing on Concord’s Joseph B. Walker and the Forest Society’s Philip Ayres, Marcia Schmidt Blaine will explore the relationship between our mountains and the individuals who worked to protect them in this New Hampshire Humanities Council program.
One Book One Valley
